What it means

Building safe, decent housing for low income, working families is at the core of the Habitat for Humanity mission. At its inception in 1976, Habitat for Humanity International developed the concept of “partnership housing.” The concept centered on those in need of adequate shelter working side by side with volunteers to build simple, decent houses. This concept is summarized by the phrase “a hand-up, not a hand-out”.

Through the work of Habitat, millions have found new hope in the form of affordable housing. Churches, community groups and others have joined together to successfully tackle a significant social problem―decent housing for all. Since 1976, Habitat has helped over seven million people find strength, stability and independence through safe, decent and affordable shelter.

In our area – Sussex and Warren Counties – Habitat for Humanity Northwest New Jersey has applied these principles to work with community and family partners to complete homes for 38 families.

Our Warren construction volunteers work on most Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and are currently building a home in Harmony, NJ.  Our Sussex construction volunteers are working on Wednesdays and Saturdays revitalizing a home in Wantage, NJ.
