Rural Rally
To shine a light on the need for more affordable homes in rural America, Habitat for Humanity is sponsoring our first Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project Rural Rally, with home builds and rehabs in more than 17 rural communities across America, during the last week of October alongside the project’s signature large-scale build in Austin, Texas.
Habitat for Humanity Northwest New Jersey is proud to be a part of this national effort to highlight how communities, residents, policymakers and supporters are working together to create the affordability and access that brings homes within reach for all Americans.
Habitat for Humanity Northwest New Jersey is the sole representative from NJ and 1 out of 17 Habitat affiliates from across the United States (out of 1,500!) to participate in the Carter Work Project Rural Rally!

While fast-growing urban areas receive much of the attention when it comes to affordable housing, the national housing crisis also has hit rural America hard:
- In the 2021 U.S. Census, over 1.4 million rural homes were reported as severely or moderately inadequate
- Over 11.5 million rural homes had health and safety hazards
- 1 in 4 rural households spend more than 30% of their monthly income on housing
- Nearly 22% spend more than half of their monthly income on housing
